Wayne, N.J. (9/12/12) – The William
Paterson University field hockey team tipped in the game-winner
just over minute into the extra period defeating Kean University by
the final of 3-2 in NJAC action on Wednesday night.
Sophomore Aubrey Pellerin redirected a cross into the
right post for the game-winner with 71:15 on the clock, breaking a
2-2 tie. The win gives the Pioneers a 2-4 overall record, 1-0
mark in the NJAC. The loss drops Kean to 3-3 this season and
0-1 in conference play.
William Paterson struck first in the contest as junior Jacqui
Giammetta scored her first of two on the night at the 7:28
mark. Junior Stephanie Soares tied things up
as she converted a penalty corner opportunity in the
16th minute.
The score would remain that way until the second half as
Giammetta put the Pioneers back on top at 58:33. But the
Cougars scored right back, in fact just 10 seconds later, as
freshman Laura Cheatham tapped in a pass from
Soares (pictured left) to knot the game at two-all.
The Cougars outshot the Pioneers, 14-9 and held a slight edge in
penalty corners at 8-7.
Kean returns to action on Saturday, when they travel to Roanoke,
Virginia for tournament action.
