Newark, N.J. (9/19/12) – The Kean University men's soccer team scored two goals in the span of less than two minutes to top host Rutgers-Newark, 2-1, Wednesday evening in NJAC play.
Freshman Jose Arevalo scored just into the 66th minute on a low cross from the middle of the 18 yard line from sophomore Erickson Simeon (pictured left) to level the score. Simeon then broke away on a through pass from near midfield from freshman Luis Velasquez to give the Cougars (5-3, NJAC 1-1) the lead for good.
Kean played down two players for the final 17 minutes, surviving a penalty kick and nine Scarlet Raider shots from the field. The Cougars did not attempt a shot during the closing minutes but still finished in a 16-16 stalemate in shots for the match.
Senior goalkeeper John Londono made a key save in the closing minutes as he dove low to his right to block junior Nick Kyprianou's penalty kick with 5:10 remaining. Londono finished with four saves.
The Cougars return to NJAC play on Saturday as they travel to Rutgers-Camden for a 7 p.m. matchup.
