Men's Soccer Plays Rutgers-Newark to One-All Draw

HILLSIDE, N.J. (10/12/13) – Freshman Akwasi Adu scored his team-leading seventh goal of the season as the Kean University men's soccer team earned a 1-1 draw with Rutgers-Newark on Saturday.

The Cougars and Scarlet Raiders both earned a point in the NJAC standings; Kean is now 9-5-1 overall and 0-4-1 in the conference, while Rutgers-Newark is 11-3-1 and 2-2-1 in the league. It was the Raiders' seventh overtime decision and third double-overtime contest.  Rutgers-Newark is now 4-2-1 in extra period games and 1-1-1 in double-overtime outcomes. Kean is 1-1-1 in extra time this season.

Adu scratched across the game's first goal as he took a long serve off the boot of keeper Tyler Callahan and finished it off just outside the net in the 19th minute. Callahan (pictured left) earned the assist – his first of the year - and made six saves for Kean on the day.

Rutgers-Newark made an immediate impact to start the second half as freshman Anthony DeRisi made the soft touch to start the second half at midfield.  Junior Raphael Araujo then launched a high shot that he served directly on goal.  The ball sailed in above the keeper to knot the game at one-all.

The goal for Araujo is the 18th of the season, tying the Scarlet Raider single-season program mark.  In the latest NCAA statistical ranking, Araujo was leading all of Division III in goals scored this fall.

The Scarlet Raiders took the only two shots of the cautiously played extra time; neither one even challenged Callahan in the Cougar cage and both teams settled for a single point.

The Cougars will travel to Montclair State University for a 7 p.m. NJAC date with the Red Hawks on Wednesday.
