JERSEY CITY, N.J. (10/2/13) – The Kean University men's soccer team fell to New Jersey City University 2-0 on Wednesday afternoon. NJCU earned a goal midway through the first half and added a late-game insurance tally to win the matchup of 1-1 NJAC teams.
Andy Caban got the first goal for the Gothic Knights off a header near the six-yard box. The entry pass was served in from the left endline by Aboubacar Diawara, who was credited with the assist.
Down 1-0 until the final few minutes, Kean was aggressive in its pursuit of the game-tying goal. NJCU was content to counter-attack, and eventually it paid off for the hosts.
It was Mohamed Conteh who ended the hopes of a Cougar comeback. He fired a beautiful shot from 40 yards out to a perfect spot just over the leaping Kean goalkeeper to give the Gothic Knights (5-4, 2-1 NJAC) a 2-0 cushion with five minutes to go. They would hold on for the victory.
The Cougars fell to 8-4 overall and 1-2 in conference play.
Most stats were fairly even; NJCU led shots 15-13 and shots on goal 5-3, while the Cougars took three more corner kicks. Stephen Moll and Kenny Rocha both had three shots for KU.
Kean will return home and face NJAC rival Ramapo College at Alumni Stadium at 4 p.m. on Saturday.
