UNION, N.J. (10/24/13) – The Kean University men's soccer program celebrated the careers of six seniors on Thursday evening. In a double-overtime thriller, the Cougars fell to Rowan University in a 2-1 final.
Before the game, Kean honored Stephen Moll, Tomasz Wisniewski, Joe Brisindi, Dominick DeLello, Gordon Lyng and Tyler Callahan, all playing in the final home game in their college careers.
With 15 minutes gone in the first period, Callahan – the Cougar goaltender - stopped what amounted to a one-on-none break on the left side by coming far out of his cage and making a slide tackle to stymie the Prof attack.
Rowan went on to score the only goal of the first half off a set piece. With the ball placed at midfield, Dylan Smith sent a low line-drive shot into the box. The ball grazed off Shane Kohler's head and into the Cougar net for the opening score.
Kean outshot the Profs 11-6 in the first half, the Cougars took all three first-half corners and both teams earned a yellow card in the physical first 45.
Another great save by Callahan on a point-blank shot 10 minutes after halftime kept it a one-score game.
With time running out, Rowan committed a foul in the box. Moll converted the penalty kick to tie the game with less than 15 minutes remaining in regulation. The final minutes passed without a goal and the game went to extra time.
At the end of the first overtime - with single digits ticking off the clock - Pablo Valle got the ball in deep for a great Kean scoring chance but Ryan Gill came up with a big save to send it to the final extra period.
There, after a Rowan corner kick, the ball squirted loose from the scrum in front of the net. No one saw it but Christian Fountain, whose soft shot passed over the goalline unnoticed for the game-winning score. Kean fell to 9-8-1 and 0-7-1 in the NJAC, while Rowan is now 10-8-0 and 3-5-0 in the league.
The Cougars will head up to the University of Rochester on Saturday for the final non-conference match of the year with the Yellow Jackets at 7 p.m.
