UNION, N.J. (10/29/13) – The Kean University field hockey program honored the six members of its senior class before Tuesday's NJAC matchup with No. 1 Montclair State University. The Red Hawks (17-1, 5-1 NJAC) topped Kean 5-0 in both teams' final regular season conference game.
Before the night began, seniors Stephanie Soares, Korri Thompson, Claire Keenan, Stephanie Rios, Diane Boccella and Julie Knodt were the focus of a pregame ceremony honoring their many accomplishments in the past four years.
10 minutes in the matchup, Montclair scored its first goal on a rebound. Cougar goaltender Katie DiCarlo got the initial shot but Maura Johnston picked up the loose ball and put it away for the early lead. It was the same story on the second score; DiCarlo kicked the first shot away but Stephanie Lewis was there to pounce on the rebound.
With five minutes to go before the break, Gianna Moglino threaded a pass through the defense and Katie Lipsit finished it off for a 3-0 lead for the Red Hawks midway through the contest. Kean managed three shots and both teams took one penalty corner in the first 35 minutes.
The second half saw two more Montclair goals as the Cougars struggled to generate any scoring opportunities against the quick MSU defense. Soares came the closest to scoring for Kean, while Boccella and Marissa Robinson both had defensive saves for the Cougars.
Kean (13-4, 2-4 NJAC) will wrap up the regular season on Saturday at SUNY New Paltz in a 1 p.m. tilt.
