Soares Stays Hot as Field Hockey Win Streak Hits Five

SCRANTON, Pa. (10/8/13) – Senior Stephanie Soares scored twice on Tuesday night as the Kean University field hockey team outplayed Keystone College 3-1 in Scranton. The senior from Berkeley Heights has five goals in the last two games for the Cougars (13-1).

Soares single-handedly put Kean in the driver's seat early on with an unassisted goal at 14:30 of the first period. It was her fourth-straight goal after capping the Cougars' previous contest with a natural hat trick.

Shortly after, Kean was applying pressure again. Korri Thompson got off a shot that was saved by the Giant goaltender, but the rebound came to Laura Cheatham. The sophomore got the ball and passed to freshman Bridgette Bottinelli (pictured left) who pushed the ball into the Keystone cage for a 2-0 lead at 20:48.

The Cougars allowed only two Giants to take shots on Tuesday, though one of them – Brittany Cardona – was able to score with less than 10 minutes remaining to rob the Cougars of the shutout.

With five minutes to go, Soares ended any hope of a comeback by scoring with an assist from Marissa Robinson for her 13th goal of 2013.

The Cougars - national leaders in penalty corners - dominated that statistic again to the tune of 13-4 in the game and took three times as many shots as the Giants, who fell to 2-9.

Kean will travel to St. Mary's College of Maryland on Saturday for a high noon showdown with the Seahawks.
