HILLSIDE, N.J. (10/9/13) – The Kean University men's soccer team used four second-half goals from four different players to break a scoreless halftime tie and top the John Jay College of Criminal Justice 4-0 on Wednesday.
Nine minutes into the game, Patrick Foley sent header just wide after long serve into the box by Cougar goalkeeper Tyler Callahan. Minutes later, Kean was fouled just outside the 18; Edgardo Alfaro's ensuing shot looked like it was headed toward the corner but great diving save kept the game scoreless.
Later in the half, Kenny Rocha's header in traffic hit the post at 35:00 and another shot by the freshman hit the underside of the crossbar with four minutes to go as the Cougars dominated play but had little to show for it in the first 45 minutes. The Kean defense held John Jay without any shots in the first half.
After a first period filled with rotten luck for the Cougars, a corner kick led to a John Jay handball in the box and a Kean penalty kick opportunity. Gordon Lyng calmly put it in for the first score of the afternoon.
Just two minutes later, Akwasi Adu launched a header in the box. It was saved, but the rebound came to sophomore John Corrales (pictured left) who buried it for his first goal of the season and the 2-0 lead.
A dangerous tackle by the John Jay goaltender gave Kean their second penalty kick in 10 minutes, and Stephen Moll took that one and made the score 3-0.
On the game's final goal, a great pass by Mike Whalen set up Jonathan German in all alone; Whalen popped it right over the defensive line and beat three defenders on that single touch. From there it was an easy conversion for German for his second goal of the game.
The Cougars are now 9-5 on the year and John Jay is 2-11-1.
Kean will return to the East Campus on Saturday to face NJAC rival Rutgers-Newark at 1 p.m.
