KISSIMMEE, Fla. (3/14/13) – The Kean University softball team won a 12-11 thriller against Roger Williams University with a pair of comebacks and nearly clawed their way back in the nightcap against Marietta College too as the Cougars finished their spring break trip with a split on Thursday.
The first game was wild; Roger Williams scored in six of the eight innings but Kean still found a way to win. The Cougars exploded for five runs in the first inning, then managed only one run in their next five turns at bat and trailed 10-6 going into the last half of the seventh.
Courtney Yard doubled to right-center and Alexa Cavasco pulled the ball down the leftfield line for an RBI triple to begin the inning. An RWU error allowed another baserunner on for Kean, but the next two hitters popped up, leaving two out. Katie Schuh kept the game alive for Kean with a single and put the tying run on base for Megan Cegielski.
The junior outfielder cranked a clutch double to dead center that allowed Schuh to scamper home all the way from first and tied the game up at 10.
Kean fell behind again by allowing the runner placed on second to score in the top of the eighth, setting up another do-or-die situation.
Kelly Moorehead and Yard both singled to lead off the inning, which easily scored the runner from second to tie the score and put the winning run in scoring position. Courtney Melchionna (pictured left) then singled to left center and the throw home was not in time to get Moorehead as the Cougars won the epic game 12-11.
The Cougars, perhaps spent after their double-comeback win in the previous game, fell to Marietta 3-2 in the second matchup of the day. Yard pitched well, allowing only two earned runs in six innings. Kean nearly made lightning strike three times, but came up just short of erasing a 3-0 deficit with two runs in the seventh inning. The Cougars left the tying run stranded on third base.
Kean will return to New Jersey and host Susquehanna University in the program's home opener on March 23 at 1 p.m.
