UNION, N.J. (3/23/13) – The Kean University softball team scrapped with Susquehanna University over 15 tough innings on Saturday but found itself on the short end of both games at Cougar Field. The Crusaders won 4-3 and 5-3 to run their record to 12-2 on the year.
Courtney Yard (pictured left) pitched admirably in the first game for Kean. The sophomore did not allow an earned run in regulation, but suffered the loss when the runner placed at second was called safe on a close play at home in the eighth. She, along with Courtney Melchionna and Megan Cegielski, had two hits in the game to lead the Cougars in that category.
Kean fell behind 4-0 early in game two, but chipped away at the lead thanks to a pair of home runs knocked through the wind by Casey Glatts and Katie Schuh. Those dingers proved to be all the offense Kean could generate against Susquehanna starter Ashley Cole, however, who earned the complete-game victory.
Sandra Binkiewicz had two doubles in the second game for the Cougars.
Kean will hit the road Sunday and take on DeSales University at 12 noon in Eastern Pennsylvania.
