CENTER VALLEY, Pa. (3/24/13) – Four different players connected for homeruns as the Kean University softball team twice defeated DeSales University on Sunday. Casey Glatts (pictured left) and Courtney Yard, the two winning pitchers, also led Kean at the plate with remarkably similar lines: both players went 4-for-7 with three runs scored, two doubles, a homer, a walk and three RBI.
Sunday's scores were 7-1 and 14-5, though the second game packed more drama than what one may suspect.
In game one, Katie Schuh and Courtney Melchionna announced their presence with authority by blasting two homers as part of a four-run first. Melchionna had another RBI in the third and Glatts drove in two runs to give the Cougars a total of seven before DeSales was able to generate any offense. Yard went the distance and struck out six for her third win of the season.
In the second game, both teams were scoreless until the third, when the Bulldogs put together five runs on five hits and took their first lead of the day. Glatts came in to pitch for Kean at that point, shut down DeSales the rest of the way and allowed her teammates to begin chipping away at the lead.
Kean scored one in the next inning and two in the fifth to get within striking distance of the Bulldogs. Then, down to their final six outs, the Cougars exploded for nine runs in the sixth. Glatts and Yard both homered in the inning, and Sandra Binkiewicz had a bases-loaded triple down the rightfield line.
Kean would add two extra runs in the seventh to punctuate the comeback and earned its second sweep of the year.
The Cougars will travel to Long Island to take one St. Joseph's on Wednesday at 3:30 p.m.
