Softball Wins Via Shutout, Slugfest

PATCHOGUE, N.Y. (3/27/13) – The Kean University softball team picked up two road wins against St. Joseph's of Long Island on Wednesday, 8-0 in the first at 14-7 in the second. Courtney Yard (pictured left) earned the shutout in game one and Kelly Moorehead finished the day 4-for-6 at the plate.

Casey Glatts put the Cougars up early in game one with a 2-RBI single that chased home Katie Schuh and Megan Cegielski.

Then in the second, Moorehead and Courtney Melchionna led off with singles. Kelsey Hannan drove in Moorehead and then combined with Melchionna for a double-steal of second and home, respectively. Another 2-RBI single – this time by Sandra Binkiewicz – put the Cougars up 6-0 after two.

All the while, Yard cruised through the St. Joe's lineup. The sophomore struck out seven, allowed just two hits and faced one batter over the minimum of 15 on her way to her first shutout of the year.

In the fourth, Kean added two more runs on singles by Jill Martin and Cegielski to reach the eight-run plateau and force an end to the first game after five innings.

The Cougars (10-6) jumped out to an early start in the nightcap, as Schuh led off the top of the first inning with a single. After advancing to the second on a groundout, Binkiewicz drove her home with a single to center field.

After tying the contest up in the bottom of the second inning, the Eagles scored three runs in the bottom of third, to put them up by a 4-1 margin.

In the top of the 5th inning the Cougars began to make a rally using a little small ball. Cegielski and Binkiewicz started the inning by reaching on a walk and an error, respectfully, and advanced to second and third after a passed ball. Both runners would come around to score on consecutive RBI groundouts by Glatts and Yard.

The Cougars would take the lead in the top of the sixth inning. The Binkiewicz-Glatts duo again came up big in this inning again, as Binkiewicz delivered a two-run triple to put the Cougars ahead and Glatts would end up driving her home with a single to right field.

The Cougars broke the game open in the top of seventh, scoring eight runs and sending  13 batters to the plate. Martin, Moorehead, Cat Riechers and Tiffany Varriello all contributed RBI singles, while Glatts and Yard had back-to-back RBI walks. The Eagles (8-7) pushed a run across in the bottom of the seventh, but that was as close as they would get

Kean will return home this weekend to face Rowan University. Currently scheduled for Saturday afternoon, the game may be played instead on Friday. Please visit keanathletics.com for the latest schedule update.
