Newport News, Va. (9/7/13) – Virginia Wesleyan College used a balanced scoring attack to shut down the Kean University women's soccer team by a final of 3-0, Saturday afternoon in the Captains Classic.
Sophomore Kaitlyn Clunan put Virginia Wesleyan (2-0-1) on the board in the fourth minute of the game when she moved past a defender and ripped a shot from 25 yards out. The Marlins opened up a 2-0 lead in the 30th minute when rookie Annie Hartman scored from almost the same distance. Hartman took a pass from Kristen Mack and connected on a hard shot from the right. Virginia Wesleyan capped its scoring at the 87 minute mark on a goal from Brittany Wentzel.
The Marlins finished the game with an 18-8 advantage in shots and a 6-3 edge in corner kicks.
Keeper KC Nunez (pictured left) recorded five saves for the Cougars (2-2).
Kean returns to action on Sunday when they square off against the hosts, Christopher Newport University at 3 p.m.
