Women's Soccer Battles to 1-1 Draw

Newport News, Va. (9/8/13) – The Kean University women's soccer team battled in the southern heat to a 1-1 draw against the hosts, Christopher Newport University, in the final day of the Captains Classic.

The Captains (2-1-1) controlled much of the first half, outshooting the Cougars by a mark of 13-4.  CNU broke up the shutout with a tally in the 18th minute of action.  Midfielder Lindsay Mondloch played a high-bounding pass into the box, where it bounced over the outstretched hands of keeper Samantha Blair right to the center of the goal mouth. Emma O'Reilly was there waiting and poked in the goal with a soft header.

Kean would put two shots on goal in the remainder of the first half, but had both shots turned away by Captain keeper Haley Casanova.

Early in the second half the Cougars (2-2-1) broke through on a set of nice passes. Rookie Jordyn Bronsky (pictured left) got by her defender in the left corner and played a cross into the box that was collected by Kendyll Stahlin. Stahlin added a one-touch pass across the goal to Sam Marchetti, who powered it in from roughly 10 yards out.

Both teams had missed opportunities down the stretch, with each team getting four shots on goal in the second half. Neither team was able to capitalize in the extra stanzas.

Blair stopped seven shots in 110 minutes of action while Casanova tallied six saves for CNU.

Kean heads to the University of Scranton for an evening matchup on Wednesday.
