Union, N.J. (10/18/14) – The Kean University women's soccer team battled to a 1-1 draw with Rutgers-Newark on Saturday afternoon in NJAC action at Alumni Stadium.
Both teams had their opportunities in the first half as Kean posted five corner shots while Rutgers-Newark (10-5-2, 3-3-1 NJAC) attempted eight shots, but neither team was able to find the back of the net, heading into halftime scoreless.
The Scarlet Raiders struck first 15 minutes into the second half as junior Sara Corson finished a corner opportunity as sophomore Paige Lazar served the ball into the box that found Cristina Estremerla whose shot was blocked by a wall of defenders and the loose ball was then punched through by Corson.
The Cougars (9-5-1, 3-4-1 NJAC) didn't waste much time knotting the game at one-all as rookie Kelly Williamson served the corner shot into the far corner that found a leaping Shelby Pedersen whose header fell just inside the left post for the equalizer.
Each team traded chances in the overtime periods, but neither team was able to capitalize, ending in the first tie of the year for Kean.
Keeper KC Nunez (pictured left) stopped 10 shots while former Cougar Veronika Tueros made five saves for Rutgers-Newark.
Kean remains at home and will square off against Western Connecticut State University in their final non-conference game on Wednesday evening.
