JERSEY CITY, N.Y. (11/22/14) – Newcomers Najha Treadwell, Deserai Vazquez and Mikeera Brown were all in double figures to lead the Kean University women's basketball program to a 79-71 victory over New Jersey City University on Saturday.
It was the first NJAC action of the year for both teams. Kean led wire-to-wire, though the matchup was closer than that may suggest. The Cougars led by as much as 14 in the first half, when Brown hit a jumper to put Kean up 23-9 with 8:46 to go in the opening period.
The Cougars maintained a double-digit lead for most of the first period, but a 7-0 Gothic Knight run to end the half made the halftime score 37-32.
As the second frame began, the Kean lead ballooned again to 10 when Vazquez drained a three-pointer. But the Knights responded but cutting the advantage all the way back down to one with 10 minutes to go.
After that, Jaquetta Owens (who finished with 11 points), made a big fastbreak layup to stop the bleeding and spark a 9-0 run that finally seemed to put the pesky Jersey City side away.
The Kean bench was stellar on Saturday, and accounted for 38 points in the game. Vazquez, Brown (pictured left), Shanice Jones (8 points), Neia Williams (5) and Kenya Adams (4) all contributed to that total.
Jazmine Davis led all players with 13 boards and all 10 Cougars who played in the game recorded at least one rebound
Kean will be back in action on Tuesday when the team hosts No. 10 Montclair State University at 6 p.m.
