UNION, N.J. (11/25/14) – The Kean University women's basketball team dropped a Tuesday night NJAC matchup with No. 10 Montclair State University by an 83-55 final.
The Red Hawks got out to an early 10-4 lead, utilizing a full court press.
For Kean, freshman Neia Williams came in to the game and made consecutive great dribble-drive moves that led to four Kean points. Half way through the first half, Kean was only down 17-16 after a layup by Najha Treadwell. But the Red Hawks responded, and took their largest lead of the game to that point, nine, at the 6:17 mark. That led to Kean's first timeout.
Montclair took advantage of Kean's switch from man-to-man to 2-3 zone with good ball movement to the open wings. Kean went with more pressure on defense and played the passing lanes to slow down the Red Hawks, which caused a few more turnovers. Bu as the half ended the Cougars were down 39-27.
Montclair went on a 12-1 run to begin the second period. Montclair's Janitza Aquino hit three-consecutive threes to fuel the run.
At 12:10 Kean got into a rhythm on offense; a great on-ball steal by Jaquetta Owens led to two free-throws. After a timeout, the Red Hawks answered back to stretch the lead to 33. It wasn't the Cougars' night as they ultimately fell 83-55.
Jazmine Davis (pictured left) led Kean with 12 points, and Williams finished with six points, six rebounds, three assists, two steals and a block. Treadwell led the Cougars with eight rebounds.
The Red Hawks were led by Aquino, who had 26 points. They are now 4-0 and 2-0 in the NJAC, while the Cougars moved to 3-2 and 1-1 in the conference.
Kean will remain at home to face Ramapo College on December 3rd at 6 p.m.
