Second Half Surge Gives Women's Hoops Win Over Shenandoah

Bronx, N.Y. (12/30/14) – A strong second half propelled the Kean University women's basketball team to a 78-67 win over Shenandoah University in the consolation match of the 8th Annual Coaches vs. Cancer Tournament held at Lehman College on Tuesday.

Rookie Najha Treadwell was named to the All-Tournament team after her second straight day with double-digit points as she poured in a game-high 19 points along with nine rebounds.

The first half was a tight battle that saw neither team lead by more than five and featured five ties, including the break score of 30-all.  Treadwell provided Kean's largest lead of five with 15:40 to go with a jumper to put the score at 9-4.  Treadwell led all players a point shy of double digits with nine in the first 20 minutes while recording eight rebounds.  Shanice Jones tallied six points and three assists coming off the bench.

After the ninth tie of the matchup, the Hornets (5-5) took their final lead of the day with the backend of a free throw opportunity, giving them a 50-49 advantage with 10:28 to go.  The Cougars (7-4) took the lead for good 13 seconds later on a Jazmine Davis layup.  Kean would later go on a 9-0 run, that ended with a trey from Shay Collins, to widen the gap and push the lead out to double digits on their way to their seventh win of the season, and final of 2014.

Davis posted a double-double with 14 points and 10 boards while Jones registered 12 points and seven assists, with a perfect 8-for-8 from the charity stripe.  The Cougars are off until the new year when they travel to Centenary College on Saturday, January 3, 2015.
