Union, N.J. (8/30/14) – Senior Shelby Pedersen scored the difference maker on a fast break with just over 13 minutes to go in the contest to give the Kean University women's soccer team their first win of the 2014 season, 2-1.
Tied at one-all, rookie Emily Jurcsek found an open lane down the right sideline to push the ball into scoring territory and found a streaking Pedersen on the left side who settled the cross for the game-winner.
That would be the only scoring of the second half as both teams posted single tallies in the first 45 minutes. It was the Cougars (1-1) who struck first as junior Grace O'Brien served a free kick into the box from 40 yards out that was settled and finished by sophomore Jordyn Bronsky in the 13th minute.
The Violets (1-1) answered quickly as senior Cami Crawford found the upper right hand corner of the net off a cross from Melissa Menta to knot the game at one-all just under 19 minutes into the action.
NYU created the most offensive threats on the day (23-9 in shots) and held a 6-1 advantage in corner kicks.
Between the pipes, junior KC Nunez recorded nine saves while the Cougar defense added two more for a total of 11 on the afternoon in the win. Sophomore Cassie Steinberg registered four in the loss.
The Cougars return to action on Wednesday when they host FDU-Florham at 7:30 p.m.
