Montclair, N.J. (1/21/15) - #9 Montclair State University used a 14-0 run to end the first half on their way to pacing past the Kean University women's basketball team by the final of 78-48.
In New Jersey Athletic Conference action, the Red Hawks improved to 16-1 overall and 9-1 in conference play. With the loss the Cougars fall to 9-8 this season and 4-6 in NJAC action.
MSU pushed out to a 6-2 lead in the early going, before Kean tied the game up at six-all on a layup from rookie Najha Treadwell. That would be as close as the Cougars would get for the rest of the matchup as the Red Hawks controlled the advantage throughout. Montclair State headed into the break with a 46-24 lead as they ended the half with 14 straight points, 10 coming from the charity stripe. Katie Sire led the Red Hawks with 10 first half points while Treadwell (pictured left) provided eight points and six rebounds for Kean.
Montclair State then paced the second half, pushing their lead to as many as 33 (76-53) with just over two minutes remaining in the matchup.
For the Cougars, Jaquetta Owens had a team-high nine points while Treadwell and Jazmine Davis each added eight. Janitza Aquino had a game-high 15 points while senior Melissa Tobie finished with a double-double 11 points and 13 rebounds.
Kean returns home to face New Jersey City University on Saturday at 3 p.m.
