Women's Basketball Pushes Past NJCU

Union, N.J. (1/24/15) – Junior Jazmine Davis picked up a double-double as one of four Cougars in double-digits as the Kean University women's basketball team pushed past New Jersey City University, 76-71.

After trading baskets in the early going, the Gothic Knights pushed out to their biggest lead of the day (16-9) on a bucket from Jade Medley.  Kean (10-8, 5-6 NJAC) would regain the lead for good on four straight baskets, the fourth coming from Davis (17-16).  The Cougars would extend that advantage to double-digits with just over seven minutes to go in the half as rookie Najha Treadwell recorded two points from the charity stripe.  NJCU (7-11, 1-10 NJAC) closed the gap to within three points on three separate occasions in the final four minutes, but Kean was able to head into the break, sporting a 38-33 lead.

Senior AnnaRose Pierre led all players with 12 first-half points while teammates Kenya Adams, Jaquetta Owens and Davis each registered six.  Sophomore Bria Smith was nearly at a double-double as she tallied eight points and nine rebounds for the Knights.

The Cougars would hold on to the lead for the entire second-half but NJCU made it interesting on two occasions, pulling within one, including at the 1:15 mark on a trey from Kiana Briggs.  Kean used free throws down the stretch to seal the win in a game that featured 51 combined fouls and 60 total free throw attempts.

Davis finished with 10 points and 11 rebounds while Treadwell tallied eight points and 13 boards.  Pierre (pictured left) led the team with 15 points while adding nine rebounds.  Off the bench, Mikeera Brown was one point and one rebound away from a double-double.

Deseree Johnson and Smith both earned double-doubles for NJCU as Smith picked up a game-high 22 points with 13 rebounds and Johnson tallying 15 points and 15 boards.

The Cougars return to NJAC action on Wednesday when they travel to Ramapo College.
