MAHWAH, N.J. (1/29/15) – The Kean University women's basketball team's defense forced 29 turnovers and held Ramapo College to 27 percent shooting in the second half in a 56-43 NJAC victory on Thursday. The game was rescheduled after snow forced a cancellation 24 hours prior.
Freshman Deserai Vazquez led the Cougars with a career-high 11 points. She was the only Kean player in double figures, but all nine Cougars who got into the game scored on Thursday night.
Kean was good enough to build a six-point lead at halftime, with Vazquez going 2-3 from the floor and AnnaRose Pierre leading the team with six points.
But midway through the second period, the Roadrunners had launched a run to get back, tie the game and take a three-point lead with 10:54 to go. At that juncture, Jazmine Davis hit a layup, free throw and another layup within a minute to put Kean back into the lead for good. Kenya Adams and Shanice Jones also scored during that run for the Cougars.
Ramapo never got within one possession again, as the Roadrunners fell to 4-15 and 0-12 in the NJAC. Kean improved its record to 11-8 and an even 6-6 in the league. Kean had 27 points off of turnovers to Ramapo's 12.
Davis (pictured left) and Najha Treadwell shared the team lead with seven rebounds, and Jones, Jaquetta Owens and Shay Collins all had three assists.
Kean will return home on Saturday to face NJAC rival Rutgers-Camden inside Harwood Arena.
