Men's Soccer Drops Overtime Matchup with Ramapo

UNION, N.J. (10/28/15) – Ramapo College snapped a scoreless tie eight minutes into extra time to earn a 1-0 NJAC victory over the Kean University men's soccer team on Wednesday night. The game was also the Senior Day celebration for Kean's lone member of the Class of 2016, Richard Zapata, who was honored before the game.

The Cougars and Ramapo were mostly feeling each other out. Kean led the first half in shots 10-6, but had also committed eight of the game's 11 fouls.

The two goalies – Brad Watkins (pictured left) and Matthew Hernandez for the Roadrunners – had to make just three saves combined in the first 45 minutes.

By the time the second half started, a hard and steady rain was falling in Union. Ramapo also began the half with Ryan Sprague as their new goaltender.

Kean had its best chance when Alex Noriega skimmed a crossing pass that hydroplaned its way into the six-yard box. Carmine Colasurdo got a foot on it, but sent the ball over the crossbar. The Cougar crowd and bench rose to its feet in anticipation of unknotting the game, but the contest continued scoreless into the night.

With four minutes to go in regulation, Vaughn Cusano ripped a shot from 25 yards out. Sprague dove and got just enough of it to make the ball hit the crossbar instead of the twine. It was the last good chance of regulation and the 0-0 contest went to overtime. Kean led the regulation shots 23-16 and had taken seven corners to the Roadrunners' four.

At 98:13, Bayley Young directed a header toward the net for Ramapo. Watkins got it for the initial save, but Trevor Albrecht fought through traffic to volley the ball back at the net for the game-winner.

Kean is now 14-5 on the year and finished 5-4 in the NJAC. The Roadrunners end their season 8-9-2 and 2-6-1 in the league.

The Cougars know they will be in action in the first round of the NJAC Championship on Saturday, but their seeding, opponent and the location of the game will be determined when the rest of the conference's slate is completed on Thursday.
