UNION, N.J. (10/3/15) - The Kean University field hockey team outshot William Paterson University 18-5 on Saturday, yet found itself on the wrong side of a 2-1 score in both teams' 2015 NJAC debuts.
For nearly the first 10 minutes of the game, neither side took any shots or accumulated any countable statistics for that matter. The first entry in the scorebook was a William Paterson penalty corner, and they made it work for them. Elizabeth Kerr and Felicia Wetzel had a give-and-go on the play that gave WP the lead.
Kean was able to convert a penalty corner into a score in the first half as well. Krista LaMaina inserted the ball, and Teresa Carr wound up and whacked a hard shot into traffic. It was blocked down, but LaMaina found the ball in the scrum and shoved it into the goal to tie the game at 17:54. Carr was credited with an assist on the play.
Five minutes later, Carly Satter was able to sneak behind the Cougar defense to put Paterson back in the lead after a set-up pass by Samantha Monzo. WP took their 2-1 advantage into halftime despite being outshot 5-3 in the period.
Kean did not get a second half shot until 15 minutes had passed, but still outshot the Pioneers 13-2 over the final 35 minutes.
There was a flurry of activity in the final minutes of regulation. The Cougars earned 12 penalty corners in the second period, including eight in the final 10 minutes. Kean had three goals called back because of infractions and were unable to come up with an equalizer that would stand up to official scrutiny.
Meghin Stanton had a big defensive save on a shot by Chelsea Mann with seven minutes remaining in another close call for Kean.
Goalkeeper Erin Smith (pictured left) saw action between the pipes in both halves for Kean and did not allow a goal. Meg Davies earned the win in goal for the Pioneers.
Kean is now 10-2 on the year, while Paterson evened its record at 5-5. It was the first NJAC game of the year for both sides.
The Cougars will remain home and host No. 6 Montclair State University in another NJAC matchup on Tuesday night at 7:30 p.m.
