Field Hockey Pushes No. 5 Montclair State to the Limit

UNION, N.J. (10/6/15) – The Kean University field hockey team played national No. 5 Montclair State tough in a 3-1 game at home on Tuesday night.

Kean was dominant in first 15 minutes; the entirety of the action was down in the Red Hawk end. The Cougars held Montclair without a shot in that first quarter-hour, took four shots at the goal of their own and had taken the only penalty corner.

Cougar goalkeeper Katie DiCarlo stopped an MSU penalty stroke with 20 minutes to go in the first period to keep the game scoreless. Kean was playing perhaps as well as they have all season, giving the fifth-ranked Red Hawks all they could handle.

With less than three minutes to go in the first, Montclair earned another penalty stroke after a botched breakaway. This time, Charisse Meyers converted it for the 1-0 lead.

Despite the halftime deficit, Kean had outshot the Red Hawks 8-5 and had twice as many corners in the opening half.

Camille Maimone had two defensive saves for Montclair. One came on a Marissa Robinson shot and another one late in the game on Kayla Molnar. Kaitlyn Struss scored early in the second half for the Red Hawks to double their lead.

With six minutes remaining and the Cougars still trailing 2-0, Teresa Carr dribbled through a big scrum in front of the net and saw Chelsea Mann open. Carr fed Mann (pictured left) for the one-timer and Mann whacked it into the plywood for the Kean goal.

The Cougars were pressing for the equalizer, and allowed a penalty corner with less than four minutes to go. Struss scored on the corner and made the final score 3-1.

Despite the setback, Kean outshot the Red Hawks 13-9 and took six penalty corners to Montclair's four.

Up next, the Kean field hockey team will hit the road for a pivotal NJAC matchup against Stockton University on Saturday at 1 p.m.
