Late Run Fells Women's Basketball

NEWARK, N.J. (2/4/15) – The Rutgers-Newark women's basketball team was able to slide past Kean University 77-70 on Wednesday night in a tight game that featured 12 ties and another dozen lead changes. Both clubs are now 7-7 and tied for fifth in the NJAC with four regular-season games remaining.

The game was tight throughout. With four minutes to go, Deserai Vazquez splashed in three of her 11 points to tie the game at 65. The teams traded foul shots to knot it up at 67 before freshman center Najha Treadwell put Kean ahead with 3:16 to go.

Unfortunately for Kean the Scarlet Raiders, led by senior forward Jade Howard, ended the game on a 10-1 run to win by a deceptive seven points. Howard finished with 31 for Rutgers.

Treadwell (pictured left) posted her eighth double-double of the season for Kean with 24 points and 15 rebounds in the contest. AnnaRose Pierre was also in double figures for the Cougars, while point guard Jaquetta Owens had six assists and five steals to go with her six points.

The Raiders shot 51.9% (28-54) from the floor and made 18 of 22 free throws (81.8%) to offset 28 turnovers which led to 26 Cougar points. Kean shot 35.5% (27-76) from the field and 61.9% (13-21) from the line to spell the difference in the game.

The Cougars will head to Rowan University for another NJAC road showdown this Saturday at 5 p.m.
