WAYNE, N.J. (4/12/15) – The Kean University softball team completed a 5-1 week with an NJAC split at William Paterson University on Sunday. Cayleen Rizo was 3-4 and Courtney Yard pitched a complete game without allowing an earned run in the Cougars' game one win.
Kean won the first game 6-1 before falling 2-0 in the nightcap. The Cougars are now 17-6 overall and 7-3 in the NJAC. The Pioneers, who have also been ranked in the Top-25 nationally this season, are 14-9 and 5-5 in the league.
The Cougars jumped all over Paterson to start the day. Rizo walked, Emily Sabo doubled and Emily Bissonnette (pictured left), Kayla Parker and Tiffany Varriello all had hits in the first inning as Kean took a 3-0 lead.
Yesterday's heroine Alexis D'Aloisio started another rally in the third inning with a single up the middle. She came around to score on a two-out RBI double to centerfield by Rizo.
Bissonnette's RBI triple in the sixth tacked on another run, and four-straight singles by D'Aloisio, Varriello, Brooke Ennis and Rizo in the seventh capped the Kean scoring.
Yard was dealing throughout the game. She allowed only two hits – both singles – and struck out seven in her complete game victory. She is now 11-2 on the season.
Stephanie Gilbert also pitched well for Kean in her game two start. She only allowed one earned run and scattered five hits. She struck out two and pitched a complete game.
Sabo had two of the Cougars' three hits in the second game. Allison Podmajersky earned the shutout win for the Pioneers and struck out 11 in seven innings.
The Cougars will resume their NJAC road trip on Tuesday with two games at Ramapo College starting at 3 p.m.
