Men's Soccer Kicks Off 2015 with 6-0 Rout

OLD WESTBURY, N.Y. (9/2/15) – Six different Cougars scored as the Kean University men's soccer team opened its season with a 6-0 shellacking of SUNY Old Westbury on Wednesday. Sophomore Sev Kherlopian led the attack with the season's first goal and an assist, senior Andrew Lopes (pictured left) added two second-half assists and Brad Watkins earned the shutout in goal. It was the first action of the season for both teams.

Kean pounced early on Kherlopian's goal in the third minute with an assist from Michael Vargas. The Cougars added two more goals in the first half: Alex Noriega scored off a corner kick, and then Kherlopian set up Carmine Colasurdo's header goal with a pass off his own cranium.

As the second half began, freshman Vaughn Cusano was the beneficiary of Lopes' first assist two minutes into the second half of his first collegiate game. Robert Barrera was the second beneficiary and made the score 5-0.

With three minutes remaining, two more freshmen got in on the scoring in their debuts as Mathias Patino set up Joe Koetters on a breakaway goal.

Kean outshot the Panthers 34-5 in the game, and Watkins made both saves he was asked to on the afternoon. The corner kick count was similarly lopsided, at 14-2 in favor of the visitors.

The Cougars will be back in action this weekend at the 17th Annual Garnet Classic in Swarthmore, Pennsylvania. Kean will begin the tournament against Widener University on Saturday at 5 p.m.
