Field Hockey Holds on for Tense Victory Over Vassar

UNION, N.J. (9/9/15) – The Kean defense made a first-half goal by Marissa Robinson stand up for a nail-biting 1-0 triumph over Vassar College on Wednesday night. Goaltender Katie DiCarlo earned the shutout win and Suzanne Grochowski, Courtney Richard, Teresa Carr (pictured left) and Katie-Lynne Lussier all made conspicuous defensive plays for the Cougars to preserve the blank slate.

It was a matchup of undefeated teams; both sides came into the game with 3-0 records.

The Cougars scored their first-half goal on a simple but effective penalty corner. Krista LaMaina inserted the ball to Robinson at the top of the circle. The senior wound up but actually appeared to miss-hit it. Nevertheless, the change-up picked its way through traffic and slammed into the plywood for the game's only goal.

Vassar had a good first-half scoring chance as well. Megan Caveny teed up a shot from close range but sent it just wide of the Cougar cage.

Other than those two instances, play remained at midfield for most of the first 35 minutes. Kean outshot Vassar 7-4, and the Brewers managed to put just one shot on goal in the opening period.

With 25 minutes to go, Vassar's Monica Feely sent a dangerous pass across the goal mouth. Kean's DiCarlo, despite facing just four shots on goal, kicked away numerous Brewer scoring chances before they had a chance to materialize into a shot.

Kean had two other quality chances in the second half, but Vassar backs made a pair of defensive saves to keep their team in the game.

The Cougars owned a 12-10 advantage in shots and a 7-5 lead in penalty corners throughout the evenly-matched game.

The field hockey team will hit the road for the Wilson College Inviational this weekend in Chambersburg, Pennsylvania. The Cougars will take on Keuka College in the first round at 2 p.m. on Saturday.
