UNION, N.J. (10/1/16) – The Kean University women's soccer team put up a spirited fight against the No. 11 team in the nation, but fell by a 2-0 count to undefeated Rowan University on Saturday night.
The Profs are now 10-0-1 overall and 2-0-1 in the NJAC. Kean moved to 5-6 and 1-3 in the league.
Rain started to come down midway through the first half and gummed-up both teams' offenses. The two sides were scoreless until eight minutes remained in the first half, when Megan McKinley set up Cathryn McCarthy from 30 yards out. McCarthy headed the volley in for the only score of the first period.
Early in the second half, Dani Kitzinger sprang Maxine New behind the defense with a good leading pass for a score at 48:15. It would prove to be the final goal of the game.
Kean goalkeeper Lauren Healey (pictured left) made seven saves to help keep her side in the game. Many statistical indicators in the match were even as well: Rowan only led the shot count 16-13 and both teams took two corner kicks apiece.
In fact, Kean's Kendall Machak curled a corner kick just outside the far post in what may have been the Cougars' best scoring chance of the evening.
The Cougars will be back in action on Wednesday at home against John Jay College at 5 p.m.
