It was a well-played and tight opening period of play. The first foul of the game was not whistled until the 27th minute, and both defenses looked solid.
Robert Barrera had perhaps the best scoring chance for the Cougars in the final seconds of the opening period. With the PA announcer counting down the final 10 ticks, he ripped a laser from the football 22-yard line (32 yards from goal). Garnet goalkeeper Michael Thut had to make a full-extension diving save to swat the ball out of the net and keep the game scoreless into halftime.
The Cougars outshot Swarthmore 9-7 in the opening half, but also committed seven fouls to SC's one. There were some close free kicks, but Bryce Horn made three stops to hold up his end of the first-half shutout.
Kean came alive 10 minutes into the second period. Kenny Rocha possessed the ball midway in the Garnet zone. He fed the ball to Mathias Patino, who flicked it with one touch to a streaking Vargas, who ran down the right side into the box and buried a shot in the Swarthmore cage.
13 minutes later, Kazari Trought stole the ball and saw Vargas on the right. Vargas' shot was deflected by a defender, but floated perfectly over the goalkeeper's head for his second goal of the game and fifth score of the season.
The shots in the game were 15-14 in favor of Kean, but Swarthmore (6-5) never had as good of a scoring chance as the three Cougar ones mentioned above.
Horn (pictured left) earned his first shutout with the blank slate on Wednesday.
Kean (10-3) will return to NJAC play on Saturday with a game against William Paterson University at 4 p.m.
