Baseball Sweeps Susquehanna

Hormigueros, P.R. (3/9/16) – The Kean University baseball team plated 13 runs in a doubleheader sweep of Susquehanna University on Wednesday afternoon.

Sophomore Matt Krupa was a combined 4-for-7 with a double and two RBI as Kean improved to 6-5.

Game One

The Cougars stormed out of the gate with four runs and three hits in the first.  Highlighting the frame was an RBI hit from senior Andy Lopez and an RBI double from senior Chris Amato.  Kean recorded what would be the winning run in the sixth as Krupa doubled home senior Ryan Reitmeyer who reached on a single.

Holding a slim 5-4 lead in the top of the ninth, Amato switched gears from the field to the mound with a runner on second via a leadoff double.  After a sacrifice bunt moved the Crusaders just 90 feet away with the tying run, Amato was able to induce a groundout that a drawn in Reitmeyer knocked down and corralled for out number two and while holding the tying run at bay.  Amato then struck out the final batter of the contest for his first save of the season while evening Kean's record at five-all.

Lopez, Reitmeyer and Krupa all had two hits in the opener.  Rookie Tyler Hopman earned his second win of the season while tossing five and a third innings allowing two runs and seven hits with five strikeouts.

Game Two

Kean opened the scoring with a five spot in the third inning.  Senior Sal Taormina rounded out the scoring in the frame with a two RBI double.  The Cougars extended their lead with two runs in the sixth via an error and Krupa RBI single and one more in their final at-bat in the seventh as junior Tyler Heisch led the inning with a walk.  He manufactured his own runs by swiping second and third and scored via a wild pitch.

Rookie Austin Arndt (pictured left) picked up the win in relief.  He tossed three and two thirds innings allowing one hit, one walk and fanning one.

Kean returns to action on Thursday when they face Misericordia University at 1 p.m. local time.
