UNION, N.J. (4/16/16) – In a game where the teams brought a combined record of 21-3 to the field, the Stockton university Women's lacrosse team got the better of Kean University 10-5 on Saturday. Both teams now have 10-2 records overall and are 2-1 in the NJAC.
The Cougars got two free-position goals from senior Jordan Blanda in the first half, but found themselves trailing 7-2 at the break. Stockton outshot Kean 20-10 in the first 30 minutes and Osprey goaltender Mary Stornes made nine saves - one on each of Kean's shot from the field - in the first half.
Kean kept pace with the Ospreys in the second half – both teams scored three times – but that meant Stockton came away with the 10-5 victory.
Stornes was the difference in the game. The Cougars peppered her with 18 shots on goal, but the only non-free position goal she surrendered came in the final minute off the stick of Sam Gnapp. She made 13 saves overall.
Sarah Frankovic scored four times to lead the Stockton offense. Brittany Ballack scored a pair of second-period goals and led all field players with three ground balls. Goaltender Nikki Apostolopoulos had three ground balls as well and made seven saves.
Krista LaMaina and Emily Stasuk (pictured left) had three draw controls each as the Cougars won that stat count 11-6.
Kean honored its seniors – Blanda, Gnapp and Jessica Bohn – in a pregame ceremony as part of their Senior Day celebration.
The Cougars will continue their season-long homestand on Wednesday with the final non-conference game of the year against Manhattanvile College at 4 p.m.
