CAMDEN, N.J. (9/11/16) – The Kean University men's soccer team downed Farmingdale State College 4-0 on Sunday to win the two-day Cialella Classic held at Rutgers-Camden this weekend. The Cougars were the only team to post a 2-0 record. Kean's Kenny Rocha was the tournament's Offensive MVP, Mateo Castro Arias was Defensive MVP, and Phil Lopes and Brad Watkins were also named to the all-tournament team.
Castro Arias may have been the defensive MVP, but he was the one who kick-started the offense in this game for Kean. With 10 minutes to go in the first half, he ripped an 18-yarder off a restart that found the twine for the game's first goal.
Kean outshot the Rams 21-2 in the first half, but other than that set piece score the Cougars had nothing to show for it.
In the second period things opened up: Kazari Trought chipped the ball into the box to Sev Kherlopian (pictured left) for his fourth goal of the season at 62:09. Castro Arias and Kenny Rocha worked together on an indirect kick that Rocha fired home to make the score 3-0 at 83:29.
Kherlopian also had a hand in the final tally– officially an own-goal – after he set the ball into the box on the attack less than two minutes after Rocha's strike.
The Cougars dominated the shot count 31-3 and did not concede any shots on goal. Farmingdale goaltender Lucas Mallia was valiant with 14 saves, but the volume of volleys proved much too much. Watkins earned his third shutout of the season.
Kean (5-1) has now won five matches in a row and allowed just one goal in that stretch. Farmingdale is now 1-4 on the year.
The men's soccer team will return home on Wednesday against SUNY College at Old Westbury at 7:30 p.m.
