Field Hockey Wins 4-1 to Stay Perfect

UNION, N.J. (9/17/16) – The Kean University field hockey team outshot Neumann University 36-2 on its way to a 4-1 victory on Saturday afternoon. Krista LaMaina scored twice and Raykena Brown had two assists to key the Cougar attack.

The Cougars dominated the first half; they outshot the Knights 20-1 and took 11 corners to Neumann's one. But though the field was heavily tilted one way, Kean managed only one score in the first half.

The tally came off of one of their many corners; Krista LaMaina inserted it to Jenna Patrone. It was a broken play but Shauna re-gathered and fed Jordan Colna on the opposite side. The senior captain lifted her shot waist-high into the netting for her first goal of the season at 16:50.

Kean had better luck in the second half. Six minutes in Shauna LaMaina had a great individual effort with a falling-down, backhand shot after beating multiple defenders that went in the goal for the 2-0 lead.

10 minutes later it was twin sister Krista (pictured left) who put home a great feed from Brown on the right side with a one-timer. Five minutes later the same duo combined for another goal. Brown took three whacks at the Neumann goalie before Krista shoved home the rebound for the fourth Cougar goal of the day.

In between Krista's two goals Julia Mustin scored for Neumann on a breakaway counterattack for the Knights' only marker of the contest.

Krista and Teresa Carr both hit the post late in the game, meaning the Kean advantage was inches from being 6-1. Erin Smith earned the win in goal with one save.

Neumann evened its record to 3-3 on the year. The Cougars stayed undefeated and are now 7-0. The final penalty corner count was 24-1.

The field hockey team will road trip up to New England next weekend to take on Saint Joseph's College of Maine and Thomas College on Saturday and Sunday. Game times are 6 p.m. and 1 p.m., respectively.
