POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. (9/7/16) – Sophomore defender Kayla Molnar of the Kean University field hockey team scored 2:44 into overtime to stun Vassar College 2-1 and hand the Brewers their first home loss in 20 games on Wednesday night.
The game featured teams that both came in undefeated; the Cougars had just captured the Connie Harnum Classic Championship last weekend at Susquehanna.
Vassar (2-1) got on the board first, with Megan Caveny passing the ball in front for Haley Cubell to knock in just 55 seconds into the match. It was Vassar's first shot of the game.
After that goalie Erin Smith and the Kean defense stood tall. Smith turned away every other shot to keep her team in the game, with some help by two big defensive saves posted by junior defender Katie-Lynne Lussier (pictured left).
The Brewers' Paige Amico also played well, and posted nine saves in goal over the game's nearly 73 minutes.
Kean had outshot Vassar 7-5 in the opening period but could not find the first-half equalizer. With 50 minutes gone in the game, Krista LaMaina took things into her own hands. The junior whacked two shots in succession at Amico, and the second rebound also came back to LaMaina's stick and the third volley was too much for the Vassar goalie. LaMaina shoved it home to tie the game at one. It was her fourth goal of the young season.
The rest of regulation went by scoreless, putting the teams into sudden-death overtime. The Kean goal came less than three minutes in and had a similar recipe as the first: LaMaina fired a shot on goal that was saved. The rebound went off a defender's stick and then bounced to Molnar, who pounced on it and forked it into the cage for the game-winner. It was her first goal of the season and first game-winner of her career.
Kean is now 3-0 on the year and will resume its schedule on Saturday with its first home game of the year against RPI at 1 p.m.
