Women's Basketball Stops Stockton, 67-59

Union, N.J. (1/14/17) – The Kean University women's basketball team led for over 38 minutes on their way to topping Stockton University, 67-59.

With the win the Cougars share the leaderboard in the NJAC with Montclair State University who dropped their first game of the season this afternoon to The College of New Jersey.  Ironically MSU is Kean's next opponent as we circle into the second half of the NJAC schedule.

The Ospreys (11-4, 6-2 NJAC) had double-doubles from Najha Treadwell (20p, 17r) and Sasha Williams (17p, 12r) in the loss.

The Cougars (10-5, 7-1 NJAC) picked up a quick 4-0 lead thanks to buckets from De'Mean Bond and Kenya Adams.  Williams then tied things up a minute later with two baskets of her own.  Kean then led for most of the first quarter, but could not gain more than a four point advantage.

Kean was able to gain a little breathing room towards the end of the first half as Marajiah Bacon nailed a trey with 2:11 to go (31-20).  Later in the quarter she added another for Kean's largest lead of the game thus far, 13 points.  The Cougars headed into the break with a 36-25 lead.

In the first 20 minutes Ma. Bacon collected 17 points while sister Miesha Bacon brought down five rebounds.  Ruby Asabor stopped four shots plus five rebounds of her own.  Treadwell almost had a double-double in the first half with nine points and eight rebounds.

Stockton chipped away towards the end of the third quarter and cut the lead to five on two occasions on points from Williams.  The Kean lead would stay single digits throughout the final 10 minutes as Stockton kept things close.  With just over two minutes to go in the game Lea Mendolla pulled the Ospreys within four (63-59) but the Cougars battle down the stretch in the rebound game and added two buckets of their own, the first from Ma. Bacon and the final from Bond.

Ma. Bacon finished with 28 points while Adams (pictured left) recorded 13 rebounds and six points.  Bond tallied 12 points and eight rebounds.

The Cougars travel to Montclair State University on Wednesday for a 6 p.m. matchup.
