Ewing, N.J. (10/21/17) – For the first time in program history the Kean University field hockey team defeated The College of New Jersey by the final of 2-1 in overtime in New Jersey Athletic Conference action.
The #13 Cougars improve to 16-1 on the season and 4-1 in conference play. The #4 Lions fall to 11-3 this fall and finish the NJAC regular season at 5-1. Kean has one game left to play (William Paterson on Saturday, October 28th). Should the Cougars and TCNJ finish at 5-1 to end the regular season, Kean would hold the edge as the top seed in the NJAC Tournament.
After a scoreless first period, Kean jumped on the board in the 41st minute taking advantage of just one of their three penalty corner opportunities in the game as the LaMaina combo (Krista LaMaina & Shauna LaMaina) made it 1-0.
With time in regulation winding down, the Lions evened the tally as Cayla Andrews fired a shot that was saved and kicked back out, she corralled her rebound and fired again to knot the game at one-all.
TCNJ had a penalty corner opportunity as time expired but were unable to convert a shot, forcing overtime.
Less than a minute into the extra period, Jenna Patrone found herself at the top of the arc where she gathered the ball and shot to the left for the game-winner, her third of the season.
Kean plays one last non-conference game at Eastern Connecticut on Tuesday before hosting William Paterson in the regular season finale on Saturday.
