Union, N.J (10/2/19) – The Kean University women's soccer team got back on track with a 5-0 blanking of visiting New Jersey City University on a rainy Wednesday night.
Kean (4-6, 1-2 NJAC) used a balanced scoring attack, netting three in the first half and adding two more in the second. For the Cougars Emily Bretschneider, Celine Brady and Mariaelena Torres all collected a goal and assist each on the night. The shutout win was the fourth for the Cougars this fall.
The Kean defense kept busy and the double-teaming effort paid off holding the nation's leading scorer Mallensy Vargas scoreless on the night, just the third time that has happened for her this season.
The Cougars outshot the Gothic Knights (7-4-1, 0-2-1 NJAC), 29-7, while holding an 8-0 advantage in corners. In an oddly heavenly carded matchup, five cautions were issued on the night.
For Kean, Marissa Cook stopped four shots while NJCU's combined effort with three keepers collected 14 saves, including 10 from starter Cidney Lee-Sam.
Up next, Kean will head to Rowan University on Saturday to take on the Profs at 1 p.m.
