#2 TCNJ Thwarts Cougars Comeback in Overtime

EWING, N.J. (10/26/19) – Rachel Mills and Melissa Way scored as the No. 10 Kean University field hockey team fell short in a comeback bid against No. 2 the College of New Jersey, 3-2 in overtime, on Saturday afternoon.

Cayla Andrews notched a hat-trick, including the game-winner in overtime for the No. 2 Lions who remain unbeaten at 15-0 overall and take sole possession of first place in the New Jersey Athletic Conference at 5-0. Belly Reynoso made 11 saves for the No. 10 Cougars who fall to 17-2 overall and 4-1 in the NJAC.   

Andrew's tallied two first half goals as TCNJ held Kean shot less (11-0) and took a commanding 2-0 lead into halftime. In the second half, the Cougars notched two goals on eight shots. Mills scored in the 36th minute as Erin Donnelly
connected with the senior on a penalty corner situation. Kean trailed 2-1 entering the fourth quarter.

The Cougars evened the contest at 2-2 just two minutes into the fourth as Way drove down the right baseline and scored with a backhand shot. Reynoso made two key saves down the stretch to force the first overtime for Kean this season.

In overtime, the Cougars missed opportunities and eventually surrendered the game-winner in the 67th minute.

Way tallied a team-high four shots, while Jenna Patrone recorded three and Mills tallied two for the Cougars who had their record-setting 17 game winning streak snapped on Saturday.

Head Coach Leslie LaFronz and the Cougars will return to action on Thursday, Oct. 31st, hosting the Pioneers of William Paterson University for Senior Night at 7:30 p.m.
