UNION, N.J. (10/31/19) –
Melissa Way tallied a goal in each half as the No. 9 Kean University field hockey team completed the 2019 regular season with a 5-1 victory over William Paterson University on Senior Night.
Rachel Mills,
Jenna Patrone and
Peyton Mann all notched a goal for the No. 9 Cougars who finish the regular season at 18-2 overall and 5-1 in the New Jersey Athletic Conference.
Megan Hoopes scored for the Pioneers who finish their season at 7-11 overall and 0-6 in the NJAC.
Kean tallied three first-quarter goals, including one each for both Cougar seniors in Mills and Patrone. Patrone gave Kean the 1-0 lead in the 8
th minute after dribbling through the defense and firing a backhanded shot. Mills put the Cougars in front 2-0 in the 9
th minute after collecting a pass from
Ja'Carra Jackson and ripping a hard shot from just inside the line.
Way notched her first goal in the 11
th minute after scoring off a keeper's save and powering the ball over the line for the 3-0 lead.
In the second half, Kean added insurance goals by Mann and Way. Mann scored after stepping between a bad pass and dribbling around a defender to beat the keeper between the legs. Way tallied her second goal of the evening after taking the ball from the Paterson defender and scoring across the goal.
Way recorded a match-high six shots, while Patrone tallied five and both Mills and
Erin Donnelly took three shots apiece.
Belly Reynoso and
Jenna Flemings combined for four saves in the victory.
The Cougars secured the #2 seed in the upcoming NJAC tournament and will host the nationally-ranked Profs of Rowan University in the semifinals on Wed. Nov. 6
th at a time to be determined.
