First Quarter Surge Sends Football Past Christopher Newport, 30-6

Union, N.J. (10/5/19) – The Kean University football team burst out of the gate with 21 first quarter points on their way to their second straight win of the season, this time a 30-6 victory over visiting Christopher Newport University on Saturday afternoon.

Kean (2-2, 1-0 NJAC) extends their series streak, staying undefeated in Alumni Stadium against the Captains in four meetings in Union, N.J.  The Cougars also now hold a 4-2 edge in the series.

Anthony Broccoletti was 15-of-26 for 242 yards and two touchdowns for the Cougars.  Kean racked up 404 yards of total offense on the day while the defense held Christopher Newport (0-4, 0-1 NJAC) to just 179 while picking off four passes.  Anthony Bassani led the defensive effort with two interceptions on top of six tackles on the afternoon.

After forcing a four and out on CNU's first possession, the Cougars started their first drive of the day with good field position at their own 39 yard line.  On second down near midfield, Broccoletti found Aubyn Bryan II for a 35 yard strike to put the Cougars into the redzone.  Jessey Asare inched the Cougars closer with a 13 yard dash and Tyrae Taylor finished off the drive for a 7-0 lead.

The Cougar defense added two more four and outs on CNU's next two possessions and Kean capitalized on their third drive of the day as Asare turned a third-and-three on the CNU 46 into a 14-0 lead with a 46 run.

Another four and out gave Kean the ball back with just over four minutes to go in the first quarter and Myles Toppin took advantage taking Broccoletti's pass 76 yards for a 21-0 lead.

The Captains got on the scoreboard early in the second quarter as Dylan Curran booted a 41 yard field goal (21-3).

The score would remain that way until the third quarter as Curran again put points on the board for CNU, this time a 36 yarder to cut the score to 21-6.

Bassani registered his second interception of the day late in the third period and the Cougars turned that into points as Asare took the first play of the drive 72 yards down the field to put Kean inside the 10.  Broccoletti found the corner and Toppin converted to give Kean a 27-6 lead.

On the ensuing kickoff, Kahim Newsome forced a fumble on the return and Tyrese Snipe scooped it up to set up good field position for Kean to start the fourth quarter.  Freshman Logan Matthews later added what would be the final tally of the day, a 26 yard field goal and the final of 30-6.

Asare finished with 159 rushing yards and one touchdown while Toppin tallied 80 receiving yards and two touchdowns.  On defense, Dante Capozzoli led the unit with 11 tackles, 0.5 for a loss, and one interception (15 yards).

For the Captains, Sean Wilkinson led all players with 14 total tackles, 1.5 for a loss, a sack and a quarterback hurry.

Kean travels to Rowan on Saturday, October 12th for a 2 p.m. start.
