Union, N.J. (10/8/19) – The Rowan University women's volleyball team upended Kean University by the final of 3-0 on Tuesday evening in NJAC action.
Kailey Gallagher led all players with 12 kills on the night as the Profs improve to 11-9 overall and 4-1 in the NJAC. Jesse Larkin was one of three players with 10 kills for the Cougars who fall to 15-7 this season and 4-1 in conference play.
It was a see-saw battle in the first set as both teams traded points before Kean made a short spurt to push ahead, 12-9. A Prof timeout halted the run momentarily and after tying things up at 13-all the Cougars again took a three point advantage with the aid of a Zoe Strozewski kill and assisted blocks by she and Kayla Thornton. From there it was once again a see-saw affair but Rowan used three consecutive points late to turn a one point advantage into four as Natalie Ogden tallied two kills. Kean closed within two, but it was Ogden again who closed out set one.
Set two was a game of runs as Rowan took an early advantage (7-4). The Cougars responded and after trading points took a two point lead (15-13) with a kill from Strozewski and another assisted block by her and Sian Seeger. The tide shifted and the Profs rolled off six straight points to jump ahead, 19-15. The run game continued as it was the Cougars turn to notch five points of their own while taking a 20-19 lead. Kills from Larkin and Strozewski gave Kean set point (25-24), but the Profs were able to collect three straight to jump ahead two sets to none.
Rowan jumped out to an early 11-3 lead in the final set and didn't look back picking up the straight set win.
For Kean, Larkin hit .455 with three digs while Strozewski registered 10 kills and three assisted blocks. Freshman Sedona Gaard added a double-double 10 kills and 11 digs.
For the Profs, Ogden earned a double-double with 11 kills and 13 digs.
The Cougars return to action on Friday when they host Kenyon College at 7 p.m.
