Salem, Va. (12/29/19) – The Kean University women's basketball team fell to the University of Mary Washington in the Susan Dunagan Holiday Classic hosted by Roanoke College by the final of 66-58.
Shannon McCoy led Kean (7-3) with 17 points while senior Payce Lange chipped in with 15 points, four steals, and four rebounds.
It was a back-and-forth first and second quarters, with neither team getting breathing room. UMW (8-3) started to gain some momentum and pushed out to a seven point lead late in the second quarter, but the Cougars used a short spurt to take what would be their last lead of the game (32-31) with under a minute to go before the half. Lange provided four points in the paint while Emily Dominguez added two from the charity stripe. Cindy Foresta gave Kean their final lead with 45 seconds to go in the half. Two free throws from Mary Washington to close out the quarter would give them the lead for good.
Kean held the deficit to single digits for most of the final 20 minutes, but were not able to pull out the victory.
Danielle Mills and Foresta each finished with eight points apiece, with 11 and nine rebounds respectively.
Kean will face the College of Wooster in the consolation matchup at 5 p.m. on Monday.
