Softball Records Two Victories at Mountain Mash

SALEM, Va. (3/2/19)- Caroline Ratti finished 4-for-11 with six RBI's and five runs scored as the Kean University softball team went 2-1 on the only day of competition at the Mountain Mash hosted by Roanoke College and Virginia Wesleyan College.

Kean 12, Emory & Henry 4

Ratti went 3-for-5 with four RBI's and two runs scored, while Julie Raba finished 3-for-5 with three RBI's and two runs scored as the Cougars (3-0) recorded 12 runs on 13 hits in the victory over the Wasps (3-5).

After surrendering an early 3-0 lead, Kean scored six runs in the fourth and fifth innings, including Ratti posting a two RBI singles in both the fourth and fifth innings as Kean took a commanding 9-3 lead.

Taryn DiGiacomo struck out two batters in the complete game victory.

Kean 9. Fredonia 1 (6 Inn.)

Gabriella Fredette went a perfect 3-for-3, while Erin Hollyfield went 2-for-4 with three RBI's and Ratti finished 1-for-3 with a home run, three runs scored and two RBI's as Kean (4-0) made short work of Fredonia State (0-2).  

A 1-1 game was broken wide open with a Hollyfield two-RBI double in the third and a Ratti two-run homer in the fourth as the Cougars held a 6-1 advantage. Kean would add insurance runs in the fifth and sixth to mercy-rule the Blue Devils.

Jacqueline Riley improved to 2-0 with the complete game victory.

#1 Virginia Wesleyan 3, Kean 0

Rizo went 2-for-3 as the two-time defending national champion and top-ranked Marlins of VWU (4-0) blanked the Cougars (4-1) in the afternoon's final contest.  All-American Hanna Hull fanned 13 batters and held Kean to just five hits to keep VWU undefeated.

Raba, Sarah Zengel and Fredette joined Rizo in recording a hit over the two-time National Player of the Year.

Head Coach Margie Acker and the Cougars will return to action on Tuesday, Mar. 5th, hosting the Devils of FDU-Florham for a doubleheader beginning at 3:00 p.m.
