NEWARK, N.J. (1/29/20) – Jared Latane and
Jeff Cooper combined for 29 points as the Kean University men's basketball team dropped a New Jersey Athletic Conference road contest to Rutgers-Newark, 70-49 on Wednesday evening.
Quincy Rutherford totaled 22 points and seven rebounds for the Scarlet Raiders who improve to 11-8 overall and 7-5 in the NJAC. Latane finished with 15 points for the Cougars who fall to 5-14 overall and 2-10 in the NJAC.
Kean played well for the first shift of the game as a Cooper triple put Kean in front 10-8 in the opening five minutes. After that, Newark responded by closing out the half with a 26-10 run to take a 34-17 lead into the locker room.
The Cougars struggled to shoot the basketball in the opening stanza with a 23.5% field percentage from the floor and 22.2% from the downtown. Rutgers-Newark finished with a 42.3% from the floor and a 50.0% from distance.
Kean found it tough to overcome the halftime deficit despite improve their shooting percentage in both areas. Newark opened the second half with a 14-5 run to expand their advantage to 47-22 with 12:05 remaining. The Scarlet Raiders continued to push their lead to the largest of the game at 66-35, before the final buzzer.
