Union, N.J. (2/1/20) – Fatimah Williams dropped a career-high 43 points to lead the Rutgers-Camden women's basketball team past Kean University by the final of 84-75 on Saturday afternoon in NJAC action.
Payce Lange and Shannon McCoy combined for 43 of Kean's 75 points on the day as the Cougars fall to 13-7 this winter and 9-4 in conference play. The win improves the Scarlet Raptors to 11-9 overall and 4-9 in the NJAC.
After a nip-and-tuck first quarter, Rutgers-Camden used a 14-0 run to start the second stanza and push out to an 11 point advantage (35-24) with 5:20 to go in the first half. Lange broke up the run with a three-pointer and brought the deficit down to single digits. The teams see-sawed the final five minutes as Rutgers-Camden went into the break with a 10 point lead, 45-35.
Williams collected 24 points in the first 20 minutes while Kayla Newton added seven points and 10 rebounds as Rutgers-Camden took advantage of 12 offensive boards in the first half, outrebounding the Cougars, 28-15.
The Scarlet Raptors then stormed out of intermission, pushing their lead out to as many as 26 with the final points of the third quarter on a free throw from the charity stripe from Williams.
Despite the large deficit, the Cougars chipped away and turned a 20 point deficit until single digits in the final three minutes of action, thanks in part to offensive rebounding. A fastbreak trey from McCoy with 30 seconds to go cut the disadvantage to just seven. Forced to foul, Rutgers-Camden added one more and time slipped away as Kean was unable to complete the comeback.
Cindy Foresta registered nine points and 12 rebounds, along with seven assists and four steals for Kean.
Newton finished with a double-double 12 points and a game-high 19 rebounds while teammate Jalissa Pitts had 19 points and nine rebounds.
The Cougars return to NJAC action on Wednesday when they travel to Ramapo College.
