ARLINGTON, Va. (2/14/20) – Jared Ray tallied at least 20 kills for the second time this season as the Kean University men's volleyball team dropped a Continental Volleyball Conference match to Marymount University, 3-1 on Friday evening.
Sam Safley finished with 19 kills and posted a .500 hitting percentage for the Saints who improve to 8-8 overall and 2-1 in the CVC. Ray totaled 21 kills and six digs for the Cougars who fall to 3-9 overall and 1-1 in the CVC.
Marymount captured a tight opening set by hitting .556 with no errors in the 25-22 victory. Kean bounced back to capture set two 25-22 as Kean posted a .321 hitting percentage and Ray tallied six kills. The Cougars trailed by as much as three early, but a 9-3 run during the middle of the set that propelled Kean in front at 19-16. Ray and
Kevin Molina each posted timely kills to help the Cougars stay in front.
The third set saw back and forth play before the Cougars used a 6-1 run to take a 19-15 lead. The Saints responded by closing the set with a 10-3 run, including
Ervin Harrell serving for the last five points.
Kean fell behind 14-7 in set four and was able to bring the Marymount advantage down to one point on two separate occasions, but the Saints recorded another .300 hitting percentage to propel the home squad to the victory.
Seth Russell finished with seven kills and 11 digs, while
Maxim Kostin finished with seven kills and a .583 hitting percentage. Molina and
Leonel Maizonet each totaled six kills, while Molina collected 10 digs in the process.
Zach Gerken totaled a season-high 42 assists in the loss.
