UNION, N.J. (2/22/20) – Gabriella Fredette went 6-for-8 with three RBI's and three runs scored as the Kean University softball team swept the opening day of the 2020 season with victories over FDU-Florham and New York University on Saturday.
Kean 8, FDU 0 – 5 Inn.
Fredette went 3-for-3 with two RBI's and a run scored as the Cougars (1-0) mercy-ruled the Devils (0-1) in the morning contest.
Kean scored eight runs on 11 hits as
Caroline Ratti and
Hailey Sweeney joined Fredette with two RBI's apiece. The Cougars did most of their damage in the first three innings with a combined six runs coming in the second and third innings.
Fredette put Kean in front 2-0 with a two-RBI single up the middle.
Julie Raba and Sweeney increased the lead to 5-0 with an RBI double down the right-field line from the sophomore and a two-RBI single from the freshman.
Ratti capped off the game with a two-run homer to left field as Kean lead 8-0 in the third.
Taryn DiGiacomo struck out six batters in the complete-game victory.
Kean 13, NYU 7
Sarah Zengel went 3-for-5 with two RBI's and two runs scored, while Fredette finished 3-for-5 with an RBI and two runs scored as the Cougars (2-0) came out on top with a hard-fought win over the Violets (1-1).
Kean and NYU traded runs for the first three innings as the Violets held a 3-2 lead in the bottom of the third. The Cougars responded in the fifth with five runs on four hits and two errors to take a 7-3 advantage entering the bottom half of the fifth.
DiGiacomo, Ratti, Raba, Sweeney, and Fredette all scored runs in an inning that didn't have an RBI hit.
NYU scored two more runs in the bottom half of the inning to trail 7-5 entering the sixth. In the sixth, an RBI single from Fredette and a two-RBI single from
Maria Bonfanti increased Kean's advantage to 10-5. After two more runs in the sixth from NYU, Kean added insurance runs in the seventh with a Zengel RBI single and a pop fly error that allowed two runs to cross the dish.
Sweeney earned her first collegiate victory after tossing six innings.
