Women’s Volleyball Sweeps Gwynedd-Mercy

UNION, N.J. (10/29/21) – Julia Vacca and Anne Beckemeyer both tallied six kills apiece and hit over .500 as the Kean University Women's Volleyball team swept Gwynedd-Mercy University, 3-0 in straight sets on Friday evening.

Ashley Smith totaled eight kills, three aces, three digs and two block assists for the Cougars who improve to 15-10 overall. Bridget McTamney totaled 13 assists and three kills for the Griffins who fall to 9-19 overall.

In set one, Vacca, Beckemeyer and Smith combined for 10 kills in the 25-20 victory. The Cougars trailed 15-14 before a 10-1 run propelled Kean to set point. Kylie Brua served for five straight points, while Smith served for three straight points during the run.

In set two, Kean hit .438 with no errors as the Cougars cruised to the 25-8 victory. Kean raced out to a 15-6 lead and didn't look back. Brua served the final eight points of the set that included three aces for the sophomore setter.

In set three, Kayla Thornton and Taylor Micheaux combined for eight kills as Kean dominated the final set, holding GMercyU to a -.160 hitting percentage. After being tied 3-3 early, Morgan Hall served for seven straight points to propel Kean in front at 11-3.   

Micheaux finished with seven kills and two digs, while Thornton tallied four kills and four digs. Brua totaled 14 assists, four aces and four digs, while Gwen Hangey totaled 14 assists. On defense, Amanda DeLio collected 10 digs, while Sedona Gaard tallied eight.

Head Coach Don Perkins and the Cougars will return to action tomorrow, Saturday, Oct. 30th, in Purchase, N.Y. against the Valiants of Manhattanville College at 1:00 p.m.
